Some specific situations where NEMA enclosures would be employed include:

  • locations where personnel interact with volatile chemicals
  • in situations prone to the triggering of explosions caused by arcing or sparks
  • preventing worker injuries caused by exposure to electrical components
  • stopping unauthorized individuals from tampering with electronic, communications, and other equipment

Types of NEMA Enclosures

The different types of NEMA enclosures include:

NEMA Type 1 Enclosure

Only general indoor use is permitted with a NEMA 1 enclosure. They safeguard people from unintentional contact with enclosed equipment, just like all NEMA enclosures do. Equipment inside NEMA type 1 enclosures is also shielded from flying debris.

NEMA Type 2 Enclosure

A NEMA 2 enclosure has a leak-proof seal. They offer the same level of security as a NEMA type 1 enclosure while also guarding against mild splashing and dripping of non-corrosive liquids on enclosed components. Usually, they have drip shields. They are used in places with a lot of condensation, including laundry rooms, near air conditioners, refrigerators, and other cooling devices.

NEMA Type 3 Enclosure/Type 3X Enclosure

A NEMA 3 enclosure can withstand the elements. NEMA-type 3 enclosures can be utilized both indoors and outside. They safeguard people from unintentional contact with enclosed equipment, just like all NEMA enclosures do. However, machines or devices encased in NEMA-Type 3 enclosures are also protected from falling debris, rain, sleet, snow, and wind-blown dust. Sleet or freezing rain that forms an exterior ice layer on the enclosure cannot damage NEMA-type 3 enclosures. Compared to a NEMA 3 enclosure, a NEMA 3X enclosure adds corrosion resistance.

NEMA Type 4 Enclosure/Type 4X Enclosure

A NEMA 4 enclosure may be hosed down and is watertight. Both interior and outdoor use is possible with NEMA 4 enclosures. They safeguard personnel from unintentional exposure to enclosed machinery. Protection against falling dirt, rain, snow, sleet, wind-blown dust, splashing water, and hose-directed water is provided by NEMA type 4 enclosures. In addition, NEMA 4 enclosures are not damaged by external ice accumulation. Compared to a NEMA 4 enclosure, a NEMA 4X enclosure adds corrosion resistance.

NEMA Type 4X Enclosures

NEMA Type 5 Enclosure

A NEMA 5 enclosure is impervious to dust. NEMA-type 5 enclosures can be utilized both indoors and outside. They safeguard people from unintentional contact with the enclosed equipment, just like all NEMA enclosures do. Accidental contact with the enclosed equipment is prevented for personnel. The enclosed equipment is shielded by NEMA 5 enclosures from falling debris, settling airborne dust, lint, fibers, and flying debris, as well as from light splashing and dripping from non-corrosive liquids.

NEMA Type 6 Enclosure

The NEMA 6 enclosure can be submerged. NEMA 6 enclosures are intended for outdoor or indoor applications. They safeguard people from unintentional contact with the enclosed equipment, just like all NEMA enclosures do. NEMA 6 enclosures offer protection against both the entry of falling dirt and the entry of water through the hose-directed spray and shallow, temporary submersion. Unlike lower-ordered NEMA-type enclosures, they are not harmed by drips, sleet, or freezing rain, creating an exterior ice layer on the enclosure.

NEMA Type 7 Enclosure

For some indoor hazardous locations, a NEMA 7 enclosure is appropriate. They are additionally referred to as explosion-proof indoor enclosures. They safeguard people from unintentional contact with the enclosed equipment, just like all NEMA enclosures do. According to the NFPA 70 standard of the National Electrical Code, Class I Groups A, B, C and D are the specified hazardous sites in NEMA 7 enclosures that can function safely in (NEC). NEMA 7 enclosures are made to stop an interior explosion from creating a hazard or explosion outside.

NEMA Type 8 Enclosure

Specific hazardous interior or outdoor locations are suited for a NEMA 8 enclosure. They are also referred to as explosion-proof enclosures, either indoors or outside. They safeguard people from unintentional contact with the enclosed equipment, just like all NEMA enclosures do. According to the NFPA 70 standard of the National Electrical Code, Class I Groups A, B, C, and D are the specified hazardous sites in which NEMA 8 enclosures can function safely (NEC). Acetylene, hydrogen, produced gas, diethyl ether, ethylene, cyclopropane, gasoline, hexane, butane, naphtha, propane, acetone, toluene, and isoprene are among the types of explosive compounds that fall under this heading. A NEMA 8 enclosure can contain an internal explosion without causing an outward hazard or explosion.

Choosing the Correct NEMA Enclosure Supplier

To ensure you achieve the most productive outcome when purchasing a NEMA enclosure from a NEMA enclosure supplier, it is important to compare several companies using our directory of NEMA enclosure suppliers. Each NEMA enclosure supplier has a business profile page highlighting their areas of experience and capabilities, along with a contact form to directly communicate with the supplier for more information or request a quote. Review each NEMA enclosure business website using our proprietary website previewer for a better understanding of what each company specializes in.
